What does SaaS become when software starts doing the work?

The interface is changing; accountability, economics and durable product boundaries matter more than ever.

⌁SAAS & PLATFORMS · HN / 03

Traditional SaaS asks a person to open a screen, inspect a record and execute a workflow. An agent can increasingly perform parts of that sequence. It is tempting to conclude that applications disappear and agents replace them. This confuses the visible interface with the system of record, the permissions model and the contracts that make the action trustworthy.

02 / PERSPECTIVE

Agents need reliable capabilities more than attractive dashboards: an authenticated API, explicit scopes, reversible commands, idempotency, audit trails and clear failures. A payment, a booking, a license change and a customer notification each carry different consequences. The product's domain logic does not become less important when a model chooses to invoke it. It becomes a safety boundary.

03 / PERSPECTIVE

Pricing also changes. Seat counts describe access, not necessarily value created by autonomous work. Outcome-based pricing sounds appealing, yet outcomes are often influenced by forces outside the software vendor's control. Usage-based pricing makes compute cost visible but can punish the customer for inefficient agents. Sustainable models may blend predictable platform fees, metered activity and agreed outcome measures.

04 / PERSPECTIVE

The durable SaaS business may resemble a well-governed capability network: stable data, secure operations, clear economic units, and multiple interfaces for people and machines. The question is not whether the dashboard survives. It is whether the underlying product can explain, authorize and account for every consequential action.
